On the moose\u2019s potentially fatal unpredictability: theme of the 14th edition of Rencontres<\/span><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]It was the title of a text by French author Patrice Juiff, written during a residency in the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula in fall 2022, that inspired this year\u2019s theme. \u201cWhen I read the text, which Patrice describes as a sort of literary road trip, a narration of mental roaming in the Gasp\u00e9 with the aim of getting to know people, the territory and the beauty and fragility of the landscape, I wanted to draw inspiration from his encounters and his story in imagining the programming,\u201d explains Claude Goulet, executive and artistic director of Rencontres \u201cVery quickly, Patrice agreed to lend us his words.\u201d

RENCONTRES DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE EN GASP\u00c9SIE<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]A first photographic mission in connection with a territory and its population, entitled Parcours du point de vue, was created in the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula in June 2009, and gave rise to ten installations around the territory, the results of residencies by five guest artists. This was the backdrop for the emergence of Rencontres de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie, in 2010.<\/p>\n

Since the event\u2019s creation, the desire of Rencontres has been to help lend the Gasp\u00e9 region an identity and boost its attractiveness by way of exhibitions, public events and artist residencies. It supports and disseminates contemporary art and photography so as to make them a creative matrix of connections with the population and the public. Our large-scale projects are intended to ensure the development of an entire region away from the major centers, while promoting the dissemination and visibility of artists in Qu\u00e9bec and abroad.<\/p>\n

In inventing Rencontres it was our duty to break ground and to stand out from other contemporary-arts events. To champion photography, its language and its different various esthetics, we have put in place an arrangement covering more than 800 kilometers, which represents some 20 locations (indoors and outdoors) in 13 municipalities and national parks. The exhibits and installations that we stage in the open air are integrated into the territory, into the locations, into buildings. We participate in the identity of the territory while presenting a unique way of visiting it.<\/p>\n

The concept of Rencontres resides in the interdependence of the artists and our territory, in the mutual encounter of the population and the artists, but also in the interaction among the works, the territory and the public. Each of these different players thus participates in the process of creation that we aim to foster.<\/p>\n

We have featured a component on the photographic book in our event since 2015. In addition, as a means of publishing that type of work ourselves, in 2016 we launched \u00c9ditions Escuminac.<\/p>\n

Our vision: To introduce people to contemporary creation, its language, its codes and its various esthetics by occupying our territory, the Gasp\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Our commitment: To champion the artist\u2019s work, to increase its visibility and to further the discipline. [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]A first photographic mission involving contact with a territory and its population titled Parcours du point de vue was created in the Gasp\u00e9 in June 2009. This consisted of ten installations spread out over the territory, the result of the residencies of five guest artists. It was against this backdrop that Rencontres was launched in 2010.<\/p>\n

Over the years we have taken important steps and concluded agreements so that our event become part of an enormous network dedicated to the visual arts, further to the objective of offering artists new platforms for creation and dissemination. We seek to support contemporary creation and to forge lasting bonds with visitors. The development of an audience and the circulation of works are at the heart of our actions.<\/p>\n

Each edition of Rencontres is the opportunity to address different artistic approaches by way of activities such as artist residencies, get-togethers with the public, and school-based undertakings. Our contribution to the development of the discipline is confirmed at the panels and discussion forums that we organize between artists and the public.<\/p>\n

Our 2nd edition resulted in a highly positive balance sheet, with figures to support it. According to the \u00c9tude d\u2019achalandage, de provenance et de retomb\u00e9es \u00e9conomiques<\/em> (Study of Patronage, Origin and Economic Repercussions) conducted by SEGMA Recherche, the 2011\u00a0edition attracted 113,062\u00a0visits to photographic exhibits and installations in the 13\u00a0host municipalities, generating total direct expenditures of $9,668,456 in the Gasp\u00e9. In 2015, Rencontres received visits from over 70,000 people to the exhibitions as a whole, for a total of 210,000 exhibit visits.
