RÁPIDO REM has to do with passengers on the Tokyo subway. The title alludes to how easily the dream phase is attained. The apparently simple approach conceals research work on the cultural, economic and biological reasons behind their drifting off to sleep. The idea of inemuri (sleeping while being present) gives way to discoveries about circadian rhythms and their hormonal regulation. The esthetic result may be read as a long frieze of serious characters who live a profound and worthy unconscious life, and at the same time a response to the photobooks of Walker Evans or Michael Wolf. Presented in June 2022 in Barcelona, the exhibit won an ArtsLibris – Banco Sabadell Foundation award.

“Born in Pamplona in 1959. Law degree. I first exhibited at the age of fourteen. Local photographers and painters were my teachers. I also frequently attended photography workshops and seminars to compare my viewpoints to other people’s. For ten years or so I’ve been exhibiting at photography festivals, and I’m interested in self-publishing photobooks. Today my photographs figure in a number of public collections in Spain (Caja Navarra foundation, Public University of Navarra contemporary-art collection, Pamplona city hall contemporary-art collection…).” – Miguel Leache
